World Breastfeeding Week was celebrated from 1st–7th August 2025 by the Department of Food Science & Nutrition, Sheth P.T. Mahila College of Arts & Home Science, Surat, in collaboration with the Surat Pediatric Association (SPA).
As a part of the campaign, TY B.Sc. students, guided by faculty members and pediatricians, conducted awareness sessions in 13 colleges of Surat including various departments of VNSGU, SPB College, MTB Arts, Navyug Colleges, Wadia BBA, METAS, Gandhi Engineering, and Saraswati Mahavidyalay.
Prior to the campaign, students underwent a training session conducted by Dr. Salim Irani (SPA), where they learned how to effectively communicate the importance of breastfeeding, dispel myths, and connect the message with sustainable development goals.
During the sessions, students and pediatricians jointly emphasized:
- Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months.
- Continued breastfeeding with complementary feeding up to 2 years and beyond.
- Health, social, and environmental benefits of breastfeeding.
- Youth’s role in creating awareness and providing support to mothers.
The campaign reached 500+ students across Surat, making them aware of the scientific, social, and sustainable importance of breastfeeding. The active involvement of TY students created an engaging peer-to-peer learning environment.
The initiative successfully built a bridge between medical professionals, nutrition experts, and the youth, and contributed to the global mission of supporting breastfeeding mothers through sustainable support systems.
